What's Up Wednesday

In case you’re new to WUW, it’s a blog hop created by my sister Jaime and me, intended to help writers keep in touch with one another. If you’d like to participate, please sign up on the linky below, and be sure to spread some writerly encouragement around to at least a few other people taking part.

What I’m Reading:

I’m still reading Dreams of Gods & Monsters, which should come as no surprise considering the size of it. Some of that reading took place by candlelight since our power not so conveniently went out the other night. Very atmospheric.

What I’m Writing:

This has been one of those odds and ends sorts of weeks. I finished up my book map (which is kind of gargantuan) and I’ll hopefully sit down and give that a much more thorough look soon. I went through my notebooks and compiled a list of details I need to add or change in my ms. Most of these are little things that aren’t essential to the plot but still need to be incorporated or fixed. I also did some research and started tackling some overused words and phrases. Like I said, I fiddled with a little bit of everything. Now I’m ready for round two of revisions to officially get underway.

What Inspires Me Right Now:

My new Lenovo ideapad (see below).

What Else I’ve Been Up To:

Well, because I’m a clumsy idiot, I poured tea all over my laptop and fried it. That resulted in wild beeping noises, certain keys no longer working, and chunks of open files randomly deleting. Oh, and me going into panic mode. At 1:00 in the morning. Fortunately, the hard drive was all right, and I back up my Scrivener files religiously, so I didn’t lose any of my manuscript. Still, being without my own laptop to work on was problematic, so my boys (who are both big computer nerds) and I went on a whirlwind laptop shopping trip. I was very picky about what I was looking for but managed to find just the right one. It’s super slim, types like a dream, and even has a touch screen—not one of my criteria but an awesome bonus. My old laptop was on its last leg, so this new one is a huge improvement, and I’m looking forward to seeing what stories I can conjure up on it. And yes, I still drink tea while I’m working (come on, it’s my writing fuel) but I’m paranoid about spilling again.

The hubby and I finished the third season of Veronica Mars, and then watched the movie while snacking on mini Mars bars. That seemed like the most fitting treat for the occasion (besides marshmallows). We both enjoyed it and really hope they come out with another one. I’m sad that we burned through this crazy good show so quickly. Question: Why is there no Team Wallace? C’mon Veronica, you can’t tell me you didn’t at least consider it once or twice!

We also went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier and loved it. Then we got caught up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., something we couldn’t do before because we’d been warned that it contained major movie spoilers. Last week’s episode was unbelievable. I was so-so on parts of the season (although overall I love the show), but now they’ve really amped up the plot. I’m still feeling kind of gobsmacked to be honest.

So that was my week. How's yours going?

Finally going to see Captain America this Friday, hooray!

    Have a fantastic week :D

    1. Thanks! It was high time I got a new laptop anyway, but I could've done without the stress of accidentally frying the old one, that's for sure! Hope you enjoy Captain America as much as I did! :D

    1. Getting a new laptop is pretty great motivation for writing, don't you think? Glad to hear you enjoyed the VMars movie too!

  3. Sounds like you've gotten quite a few vital little things done - fiddling can be really helpful! :) Good luck with your next round of revisions!

Oo, your new laptop looks lovely! :) According to my laptop it has a "spill-resistant keyboard", I'm not willing to test it, though. ;)

I keep hearing about Veronica Mars. Perhaps I should try watching it some time. :) Have a lovely week!

    1. It's amazing how many random little things crop up during revisions. I'm looking forward to putting aside some of the fiddly things and getting into some more solid revisions this week.

I'm really loving my new laptop. I was so used to my old one and all it's quirks that I didn't realize just how bad it had gotten. So I guess the tea incident was timely at least! A spill-resistance keyboard is one of the best ideas ever! I don't think mine has that feature, but I wish it did!

I highly recommend Veronica Mars. Great characters and plot! Hope you have a lovely week too! :)

  4. Oh, you have a new avatar picture. Lovely!
Yay to the new laptop. Sounds like it was time for one. I'm constantly eyeing my tea, sure I'll do the same soon. . .um. . .accidentally that is, not on purpose ;)

    1. Thanks! My son took the photo. It was high time for a new photo and a new laptop, so I'm glad I got both out of the way--except for the stress of the tea spilling incident! Yeah, I don't recommend dumping your tea on your laptop on purpose! :)

  5. I'm glad you managed to save your files! And got a new laptop out of it. :)

I need to watch Veronica Mars at some point -everyone seems to be talking about it!

    Have a great week!

    1. I was so relieved that my hard drive was okay. Even though I had my story backed up, there were a lot of other things I didn't want to lose. And I certainly can't complain about getting a new laptop out of the incident!

Yes, you really should treat yourself to binge watching Veronica Mars! I only wish there had been this much buzz when the show was originally on the air. Maybe then it wouldn't have been cancelled.

Hope you have a great week too!

  6. Hooray for new laptop! It looks sleek and very book worthy. :)

And I will second the motion (or third or whatever) on your new avi picture. It's simply Gorgeous! Seriously, I would cast you in a movie. Thinking about writing a book, getting a movie deal, just to cast you in it. Umm...did I say already that it was gorgeous? 'Cause it is. ;) (also, can you tell I've had too much coffee this morning? Umm...probably)

I'm sad to hear that Dreams of Gods and Monsters is kind of dragging for people. This was my reward book for being good and getting all my work done this week. I was hoping it would be stellar.

Hope you have an amazing week and that your new laptop inspires all kinds of great words! :)

    1. I got two full books out of my last laptop, even though it was already a bit of a junker when I got serious about writing, so I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get done on this new one. Some people call it a laptop, I call it a portal to new worlds. :D

Thanks for the sweet compliment on my new pic! My son took it for me. As for being cast in a movie, I'd make a great Little Orphan Annie (don't even ask about my unfortunate grade 3 hair cut) or Anne of Green Gables lol.

I was really hoping DREAMS OF GODS & MONSTERS would be an epic ending to the series too. I guess it's hard for me to figure out how so little can be happening in a book that's over 600 pages long. Maybe the second half will pick up? Hope so.

Wishing you an amazing week too, Kris!

  7. Good for you backing up your files, Erin. You never know when that simple act will be a life-saver. Surely laptop makers have learned by now to make them tea-proof? I mean, you can't NOT have a cup of tea when you're writing... :)

I like the new laptop, though I wonder--how's the touch-screen working out for you? Touch-screens are useful (and kind of necessary) on tablets, and I can even see them on desktops, where the screen is a separate item and you can ditch the keyboard if you want. But on a laptop, where you're stuck with both screen and keyboard? I think you'd use one or the other, and I'd probably use the keyboard more often.

Have a great writing week! :)

    1. Would I sound paranoid if I admitted to backing up my manuscripts on more than one flash drive? You know what they say: To err is human, but to really screw up takes a computer. And yes, tea-proof laptops should be a new thing. I mean, come on! With all the technological advancements in our world, they haven't invented that yet? ;)

I'm actually liking the new touch screen more than I thought I would. I really didn't want that feature at first--seemed like overkill--but it's kind of neat now that I'm using it. The most important factor for me was the keyboard (big surprise seeing as I use it for writing). For whatever reason, I have issues typing properly on some of the newer style keyboards, but the keys on this one suited me. I had some other specs that I was picky about too, and this laptop met them all. I'm finding that I alternate between the mouse and the touch screen depending on what I'm doing. I'm also gradually realizing that reaching out and tapping the screen is sometimes much quicker than moving the mouse and clicking. So while it's not a feature I especially needed (or initially wanted) I think I'll eventually adjust to it and even prefer it.

Hope you have a great writing week as well!

  8. I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier on the weekend too and now I really want to catch up on my SHIELD episodes! I think we're three behind now. Maybe tonight...
Nice new laptop! I never use mine because it's super old and super slow but I bet if I had a shiny new one like yours I'd be on the thing all the time! Have fun with it!

    1. Have fun catching up on S.H.I.E.L.D.! Watching a couple episodes of that after seeing Captain America was awesome. I think these latest episodes might make a big difference in the show's reception for its first season.

My old laptop was super slow too, so it's a treat to have a new one that actually works the way it's supposed to! I'm really enjoying it! :)

  9. Yay for new laptops! I bet you're super inspired to get back to work on your pretty new computer. :-) I have GODS & MONSTERS waiting for me, but man is it huge! I don't really feel like lugging it around, but I am very much looking forward to reading it. I need a nice vacation so I can read it in a lounge chair by a pool. Have a great week, Erin!

    1. I'm very inspired! I was panicking there for a while, but it was surprisingly painless finding a good replacement. The thought of having no laptop to write on for more than a day was kind of terrifying!

Honestly, if I'd known how enormous DREAMS OF GODS & MONSTERS would be, I think I would've started off buying the series on ebook. I wanted to bring a book along to my doctor's appointment yesterday, but there was no way I was going to lug that thing along, so I ended up grabbing something smaller and more convenient just to pass the time. Reading in a lounge chair by a pool sounds like heaven about now, seeing as it's been snowing here yet again. Hope your week is great too! :)

  10. I'm glad to hear you were able to salvage your files! In the end, it must be nice to have a shiny, new laptop.

I'm currently watching the second season of Veronica Mars for the first time. I'm excited to finish catching up on the series so I can watch the movie! The show is SO good. :)

Good luck starting your revision this week!

    1. It's very nice, thanks! While the tea incident was stressful, the timing was good at least. My old laptop really did need to be retired.

I'm happy you're enjoying VMars as much as I did! It's just so cleverly written--great plot and characters. I only wish there were more seasons to watch. Maybe another movie eventually? I read somewhere they're considering it. Fingers crossed! :)

  11. Love the new avatar, but you already knew that. ;-) This one looks so much more like you than the last one did AND it has books in the background. Win-win.

I have major laptop envy right now. I might have to consider a new one in the near future since I'm using mine a lot more than I ever used to. This one was a freebie when we were with Telus and it's kind of bleh. Ah well. Not exactly a priority right now. Maybe I should, you know, accidentally spill some tea on it hehehe. :P Or I could let you do it!

I'm bummed for you that you're all done VMars now. I'm partway through season 3 now. It never gets old or boring, I tell ya. This is probably the fifth time I've watched this series and I never tire of it. I'm so happy you guys loved it. I'm also happy you guys are caught up on S.H.I.E.L.D. now too. I'd be so worried that I'd spoil something if you weren't. They've done such a phenomenal job linking the show to the Avengers movies, especially CA2. And they've definitely amped things up now. Can't wait to see where they take everything now!

    1. Thanks, I like it better than the old picture too. Those are Liam's Alex Rider books in the background lol.

I'm really enjoying the new laptop. I still have a lot to set up on it though. It's amazing how long that takes. I'd never even heard of the brand Lenovo before, but so far I'm impressed. We noticed the other night on ARROW that all the computers in Felicity's work station were Lenovo. If it's good enough for Oliver Queen, then it's good enough for me! Just make sure you back everything up before "accidentally" sloshing tea on your laptop. ;)

I wish so badly there were more seasons of VMars to watch. Why couldn't the show have gotten this much buzz way back when it was on the air? Maybe then it wouldn't have gotten cancelled. Watching that big episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. felt like watching another hour of Captain America in a lot of ways. I'm glad we saw both in the same day! At first I wasn't sure how I felt about them linking the movies with the show, but now I think it's a brilliant idea, mostly because they pulled it off so well. Not looking forward to the end of the season!

  13. It's great that you transferred fairly easily to the new one. It looks awesome! I got a similar one, an Envy, for Christmas. It took me a while to get used to the touch screen combo, but I really like it now. Good luck with the revisions!

    1. Yeah, I felt a little sentimental about it seeing as I wrote two full novels on that old thing. Time to move on, I guess! I'm really liking the new laptop, so I suppose the tea accident was timed well. And thanks, my son took that photo of me. :)

  15. Oh noes! I'm glad you got a new laptop. Mine exploded so I'm hopping back and forth on school computers and it is awful. haven't see Captain America yet so I've been missing S.H.I.E.L.D. these past few weeks. Ran into some spoilers, but I don't know everything. I really want to know what happens.
    Good luck with everything.

    1. Sorry about your computer! I don't think we realize just how much we depend on them until something happens and we can't use them. My old one was due to be replaced (badly) so at least the tea incident prompted that.

That stinks that you saw spoilers about S.H.I.E.L.D. but I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did anyway! Captain America too! :)

  16. I love Wallace but I can't help being Team Piz. Sigh. I knew what I was getting in for. But I kind of love that Wallace and V. never even seemed to consider dating--they're so awesome together the way they are.

    1. Yeah, I like the best friends dynamic between them too. I was more joking about how good-looking grown up Wallace is. If I was Veronica, I'd have noticed. ;)

I love Piz too. I wish in season 3 they'd spent a little more time on his character. I ended up liking Logan more than I thought I would. He really grew on me. I'm really crossing my fingers that they'll make another movie because I want more of these characters!
